Winter brings storms, moisture, and colder temperatures. Stay on top of leaks, ventilation, and interior comfort to keep your home warm and dry.

Small maintenance issues are usually the easiest and most affordable to fix. Catching a blocked gutter, minor leak, or damaged sealant early can save you from much larger repairs later on.

Check Your Roof and Gutters

Your roof is your home’s first line of defence against winter weather. Inspect for cracked or damaged roofing materials, loose flashings, and signs of leaks. Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downpipes to ensure rainwater drains away properly and doesn’t overflow around your home’s foundations.

Keep Moisture Under Control

Moisture is one of the biggest challenges for Auckland homes during winter. Check around windows, ceilings, and exterior walls for signs of dampness or water ingress, and repair any leaks as soon as they’re discovered.

Good ventilation is equally important. Use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens, open windows when conditions allow, and make sure subfloor vents remain clear. Reducing excess moisture helps minimise condensation and creates a healthier living environment.

Keep Your Home Warm

A warm home is often a drier home. If your house is difficult to heat, it may be worth checking your insulation, particularly if it was built before modern insulation standards.

Simple improvements such as sealing draughts around doors and windows, upgrading ceiling insulation, or installing thermal curtains can make your home more comfortable while helping reduce energy costs.

Inspect Timber and Exterior Finishes

Winter weather can take its toll on paintwork, cladding, and exposed timber. Walk around your home and look for peeling paint, cracked sealants, or timber showing signs of moisture damage. Taking care of minor maintenance now can help avoid larger repairs in the future.

Test Smoke Alarms

With heaters, fireplaces, and electric blankets used more often during winter, it’s a good time to test your smoke alarms and replace batteries where required. It’s a simple job that helps keep your household safe.

Plan Ahead

Winter often highlights the areas of your home that could be improved. Whether it’s replacing damaged cladding, improving insulation, repairing a leak, or planning a renovation, making a list now gives you time to prepare and budget for future work.

Keeping on top of seasonal maintenance not only protects your investment but also helps create a warmer, drier, and more comfortable home for your family.
